Day -4
Rajan Guha With Tapan Sen ,General Secretary,Centre For Indian Trade Union (CITU)
Tapan Sen was a man who rarely smiled.
I guess, long years of militant trade unionism and the battle to keep the ideology of communism alive in world of diminishing value system turned him into a hardened soul.
Now, the all powerful General Secretary of Centre for Indian Trade Union(CITU),Sen is a die hard communist.
He serves the chair without a pay, donates 50% of his pension earned from two terms as an MP to the Communist Party, has a meagre savings from his job with SAIL.
He seemed content with life.
At 73,he is perpetually waiting for the next train ride into India’s hinterland.Campaigning among workers at the command of the CPIM polit bureau.
“What drives you to work all day at the CITU office without remuneration?” “Ideology” he said without a blink.
“With barely 62 lakh workers enrolled with CITU,has the pursuing an ideology been rewarding enough?” I braved him out knowing he might not like my question.
“We don’t pursue trade unionism for ideological rewards. We do it for common good." Sen snapped.
